Abstract
In this study, the antioxidant activity, toxicity and composition of the hexane extract of C. pubescens leaves were assessed. By comparing the antioxidant activity results, expressed in terms of the IC50, the β-carotene/linoleic acid method gave a better response (880 μg/mL) than the DPPH free radical method (1780 μg/mL). The first method is known to respond better to samples of low polarity and the DPPH method to more polar samples. GC-MS analysis of the hexane extract indicated the presence of hydrocarbon and oxygenated sesquiterpenes and β-sytosterol. The extract was not considered toxic to Artemia salina.
