Abstract
3,3â²,4,4â²,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) was photolyzed with UV light in hexane. All major photoproducts were identified, and the pathways of photodegradation were suggested. Photodechlorination occurred on the more substituted ring preferentially. The para chlorine atoms were shown to be more photolabile than meta ones on irradiation. Large amounts of highly toxic congener, 3,3â²,4,4â² - tetrachlorobiphenyl, were observed among the products during the photodegradation of the title compound.
