Abstract
Ethanol dehydration process is important in producing high-purity ethanol from renewable biomass resources. The optimal design flowsheet to produce high-purity ethanol via heterogeneous azeotropic distillation is presented. A classical example of ethanol dehydration system is to use benzene as entrainer to aid the separation. However, because benzene is a known carcinogen, the design concept is demonstrated using cyclohexane or n-hexane as entrainer. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Spring National Meeting (Houston, TX 4/22-27/2007).
