Tumours of the skin
Bogovski, P

Induction of skin tumours in mice has been and apparently will be the most widely used method in carcinogenicity testing, and in experimental cancer research. The chapter of the Manual begins with the description of the normal structure of the mouse skin and of the cyclic changes. The latter are important as they can influence the histological pictures observed in experiments. Tumours arising in the mouse skin have been described by many investigators and various synonyms have been used. Most of these publications are quoted in the chapter and synonyms indicated. The description of the morphology of skin tumours is sufficiently detailed and complete and the classification used is acceptable. Histological criteria of malignancy, biological behaviour of tumours and preneoplastic changes are discussed based on well known publications and, on the personal experience of the author. In general, no objections can be made to the conclusions. The concept of stages of progression of squamous cell carcinomas as the essence of morphological polymorphism of these tumours is in agreement with existing observations. Basic data on spontaneous tumours, on the induction of tumours and comparative aspects, are presented in the end of the chapter in sufficient details.
