Abstract
Kol wetland system of Thrissur district in Kerala, India extending an area of 13000ha is an important rice-growing tract of Kerala. The major portion of the area is flooded during a period of six months from June to November. Four rivers namely Keecheri, Puzhakkal Karuvannur and Chalakudy drains into this wetland system. The wetland is facing innumerable problems including flooding, salinity intrusion, deterioration of canals etc. The environmental status of this wetland with special reference to water and sediment quality has been carried out during the flooding season. The concentrations of the tested water quality parameters have a higher concentration in the river water samples than Kol lands. The BOD was determined to be high at the point of disposal of domestic effluents. The kol lands found have high build up of iron. The sediment samples recorded high concentration of calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron and chromium. The results show that during monsoon there is normal distribution of nutrients and other water quality parameters due to the tidal flushing and mixing characteristics and highly oxygenated conditions. But the sediment samples have high organic carbon, total nitrogen, phosphorous and metals. Copyright © Enviromedia.
