Solvent de-oiling of slack wax was undertaken to get pure paraffin wax which was further reacted with chlorine to obtain chlorinated paraffin wax (CPW). For de-oiling, three solvents, using several slack wax to solvent ratio were tried. MIBK was found to be the best solvent and three times of this at 5 degree C gave a scale wax with less than 0. 5% oil by weight. The yield of scale wax obtained was 80% by weight of slack wax. The purified scale wax was chlorinated at 75 plus or minus 2 degree C and 85 plus or minus 2 degree C, at a fixed chlorine gas flow rate of 0. 3 1/min. kg of wax, in a batch reactor. Barium stearate when used as a catalyst, reduced the reaction time from 38 to 26 hours with additional advantage of improved colour.
