Abstract
Magnesium silicates of the composition 1. 5. MgO. SiO//2. nH//2O are formed by treatment of coarse-pored silica gels with ammoniacal buffer solutions of magnesium chloride. Silica gels with pore diameters less than 50 A are not converted completely into magnesium silicates. The products of complete conversion of silica gels into magnesium silicates all have the same texture, which does not depend on the texture of the original silica gels. They are adsorption- active substances with large specific surfaces. They donot swell nor act as molecular sieves. Their maximum sorption pore volumes for hexane and methanol vapors coincide completely.
