Abstract
Investigation on the removal of manganese (II) ions by adsorption on commercial activated carbon (CAC) has been made at 30 ±1°C under batch mode. The adsorption data on the variation of (i) initial concentration of manganese (II) ions, (ii) contact time, (iii) dose and (iv) initial pH of the solution are determined. The percentage removal of manganese (II) ions increased with the decrease in initial concentration and increased with the increase in contact time, dose of adsorbent (CAC) and initial pH of the solution. Adsorption data have been analysed with the help of Frendlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms and first order kinetic equations, namely Natarajan-Khalaf, Lagergren and Bhattcharya-Venkobachar equations. The intraparticle diffusion is found to be one of the rate limiting steps. CAC could be used as an adsorbent in the removal of metal ions, in general and manganese (II) ions, in particular. © 2011-Kalpana Corporation.
