Review question/objective: This review aims to determine the best available evidence related to the effectiveness of amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol throat lozenges in patients with acute sore throat due to upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). The objective is to examine the analgesic properties of amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol (AMC/DCBA) throat lozenge comparing with placebo for the relief of pain in patients with acute sore throat due to URTIs. The review question is: Are amylmetacresol (AMC 0.6 mg) and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl (DCBA 1.2-mg) alcohol throat lozenges effective in relieving acute sore throat caused by URTIs? More specifically, the objectives are to: Evaluate changes in severity of throat soreness Evaluate the pain relief ratings Measure functional difficulty in swallowing Measure functional throat numbness. © 2017 THE JOANNA BRIGGS INSTITUTE.
