Abstract
Experiments were carried out on the immobilizing effect of ethorphine (M 99, Reckitt and Colman) derived from synthetic phenanthrene with a structure similar to thebaine. The drug had a better immobilizing effect than others. Its rapid action was very successful: a marked effect was noticed within 5 to 8 min after i.m. injection. In addition, the drug displayed a relatively long time effect (70 to 178 min) at a dose of 3.6 to 7.2 mcg/kg body wt. Another advantage was that its effect could be abolished by cyprenorphine (M 285). In order to eliminate side effects such as motoric stimulation, a mixture of ethorphine and a neuroleptic drug (phenothiazine type or a derivative of butyrophenone) should be applied.
