Abstract
Abietic acid isolated from colophony (W.W. grade) was selectively oxidized in the presence of KMnO4, into 13β, 14βâdihydroxyâ14αâisopropylabietic acid. The structure of the compound was elucidated using UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. Epicutaneous application of the dihydroxy acid to colophonyâsensitized guinea pigs suggested the compound as an elicitor of contact allergy that had not been tested before in contactâsensitization reactions.
