Abstract
59Co chemical shifts have been measured for a number of chemical compounds utilizing a Varian NMR spectrometer with crossed-coil technique at a fixed radio frequency of 10 Mc. It is suggested that this technique will be a valuable aid, particularly in studying the complex molecular structures of the cobalt carbonyls. The chemical shifts and line widths observed at room temperature for solutions of Co2(CO)8 and for Co4(CO)12 in n-hexane are reported. The ratio of the intensities of the two resonances in CO4(CO)12 is approx. 3:1. This strongly suggests that neither the D2d structure nor intramolecular transformations between three different structures, but the C3v structure originally proposed by Corradini(1) is correct for Co4(CO)12 in both the crystal and solution at room temperature. © 1967.
