Abstract
Binary mixtures of hexane isomers were separated using H-ZSM-5 zeolite membranes on porous stainless steel and Al2O3 tubes by vapor permeation and pervaporation. Separation selectivities > 1000 were obtained for n-hexane/2,2-dimethylbutane. The fluxes and selectivities could be successfully described in terms of Maxwell-Stefan single-file diffusion and activated Knudsen flux. Adsorption isotherms calculated with a dual-site Langmuir model and diffusion coefficients from separate measurements on zeolite crystals were measured from published sources. Two fitting parameters were included in the model that allowed to determine the quality of the membrane.
