The separation and determination of 16 antimicrobial agents from non-emulsified cosmetics containing surfactants such as shampoos, bath preparations and similar products is described. All substances could be separated by column chromatography on silica gel 40 hexane/acetone (7+3 v/v). Another procedure for separation is the extraction of the residue obtained by freeze drying with acetone and subsequent thinlayer chromatographic clean up on silica gel 60/acetone. This method does not have general applicability because some antimicrobial agents are volatile during freeze drying. The identification of the isolated antimicrobials is performed by analytical methods such as TLC, GC, GC/MS resp. HPLC. As an example the quantitative determination of Triclosan (Irgasan DP 300) and 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane (Bronidox) after separation is described. © 1983 J. F. Bergmann Verlag.
