Abstract
The complex pattern of pollutants of the landlocked Caspian Sea is unique as compared to the pattern found in the open oceans. It is strongly governed by the hexachloro-cyclohexane isomers, the compounds of the DDT-group including nearly all the metabolites and a complex pattern of polychloroterpenes. Compounds of technical chlordane are missing. The pollution by PCB is also low as compared to samples from the North Atlantic, a pronounced pollution by polychloroterphenyls can be found, however. The hexachlorobenzene level is also comparably low. Eggs of three species of sturgeons - Acipenser sturio, Acipenser stellatus and the predatory Huso huso caught 1979 in the Iranian part of the Caspian Sea were investigated as representative samples. High resolution gas chromatography with electron capture etection was used after clean-up by dimethylformamide/hexane solvent-partition and Florisil (1.4% water) preseparation. © 1983 Springer-Verlag.
