1. In the treatment of hydrocarbons in a sulfur dioxide medium over alumina at 500° at a space velocity of 0.5 h-1 and a molar ratio of SO2 to hydrocarbon of about 1, from cyclohexane about 35% of benzene is formed, and from hexane about 10% of benzene and about 6% of thiophene homologs are formed. 2. The deposition of 1% of metal (palladium, rhenium, or both rhenium and palladium) on the alumina does not affect the character of the transformations of cyclohexane in a sulfur dioxide medium. 3. Over a catalyst containing 10% of neodymia and 90% of alumina the yield of thiophene and its homologs obtained from hexane in an SO2 medium is twice as great as over alumina alone. © 1967 Consultants Bureau.
