Abstract
One kind of novel reactive thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer was synthesized from α-methacryloyl chloride and liquid crystalline polyester (PHBT) which was prepared from hexamethylene bis(4-hydroxybenzote) and terephthaloyl dichloride by solution polymerization. The intrinsic viscosity (ηinh) was determined using an ubbelohde viscometer in 1, 1, 2, 2-tetra-chloroethane solvent at 25°C, and the results show that the ηinh values of PHBT and LCMC is 0.0443 dL/g and 0.0797 dL/g respectively. FT-IR analysis identifies the reaction between methacryloyl chloride and PHBT. The crystalline properties of polymers were investigated with DSC and WAXD, and the results indicate that the crystalline of LCMC is superior to that of PHBT due to the addition of regular methacryloyl. Thermotropic liquid crystalline nematic phase textures of polymers were observed under a polarizing optical microscope with hot stage.
