Abstract
The reaction of a number of alkylamines and dialkylamines with chlorodinitrobenzene has been studied kinetically, and it has been found that there is a remarkable difference between the rate constants for different amines which is not directly related to their basic strength; for example, the rate constant for dimethylamine is more than 30,000 times that for diisopropylamine though the latter is the stronger base. Evidence is adduced that a steric effect plays an important part in determining the rate constant.
