Abstract
The cytopathogenic effects (CPE) of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) are inhibited in primary human amnion cell culture if it is treated with polar extract obtained from juniper berries. This also often contains agents toxic to the cultured cells. If the properties of organic solvents (chloroform, hexane, methanol, diethyl ether) are suitably utilized in extracting the juniper material, it is possible finally to obtain from the process an agent (or a group of agents) which has a potent and non-toxic inhibiting effect on the growth of HSV-1 in amnion cells.
