Abstract
t-Butyllithium has been isolated and characterized; it is a colorless crystalline solid, tetrameric over a range of concentrations both in benzene and hexane. The vibrational spectrum of the compound has been studied employing Li6 substitution. From Raman spectral evidence, a tetrahedral structure for the molecules of t-butyllithium is suggested, in which the lithium and α-carbon atoms occupy the vertices of concentric interpenetrating tetrahedra. © 1962, American Chemical Society.
