1. When phenol. or a mixture of phenol and sodium phenoxide, is heated with red phosphorus under pressure and in presence of water, a mixture of phosphorus-containing organic compounds is obtained; in contains phenylphosphine, diphenylphusphine. and triphenyl phosphate. 2. When a mixture of phenol, sodium pheroxide, and red phosphorus is heated under pressure in absence of water, diphenyl ether and traces of organophosphorus compounds of unknown structure are obtained. 3. In absence of water. phenol does not react with red phosphorus. either at atmospheric pressure, or at elevated pressures, 4. A hypothesis is advanced concerning the nature of the reaction of phosphorus with phenol under the experimental conditions used. © 1954 Consultants Bureau, Inc.
