The present work shows the experimental results in a pilot plant together with mathematical model simulation results, allowing the proposal of the upgrading to phosphorus removal of the Bilbao-Galindo WWTP that is currently in operation with nitrogen removal and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 hours. For the experimental tests the pilot plant was configured with the Johannesburg process since it is best suited to the existing reactor configuration. A satisfactory nitrogen and phosphorus removal (TN < 10 mgN/l y TP < 1 mgP/l) was achieved in limiting conditions for dissolved oxygen and ammonium in the biofilm. From simulations of the calibrated model an upgrade was proposed, by filling up either 25% of two aerobic reactors (40% of total volume) or 50% of only one reactor (20% of total volume) with BiofilmChip M carriers from AnoxKaldnes. The size of anoxic and anaerobic zones amounted to 45% and 15% of total volume respectively.
