Abstract
1. It was established that there is a definite relationship between stress in the surface layers of PMMA and the time required for "silver" cracks to appear in specimens tested in various solvents. 2. The aggressiveness of the solvents studied increases in the following order: "Galosha" gasoline; gasoline B70; carbon tetrachloride; ethyl alcohol; benzyl alcohol; ethyl acetate; chloroform; dichloroethane. 3. For each solvent there is a critical stress below which the formation of "silver" cracks is practically inhibited. 4. An attempt was made to relate the ability of solvents to promote the formation of "silver" cracks and their ability to produce swelling of PMMA. It was established that, generally speaking, these two properties of solvents are correlated; the exceptions may be attributed to differences in the diffusion of liquid solvents and their vapors. © 1968 The Faraday Press, Inc.
