1. 1. Olfactory thresholds for pentane, hexane and heptane were determined in intact pigeons, quail and chickens using operant conditioning techniques. 2. 2. For all three avian species the lowest threshold was for heptane and the highest for pentane. 3. 3. The chicken was the most sensitive (P< 0·001) of the three avian species to pentane and hexane, and the pigeon was most sensitive (P< 0·001) to heptane. © 1975.
