Explosion in an HMX (octogen) plant
Abstract
A small amount of explosive detonated in the piping just after the batch nitration of HMX (modified Bachmann process). One operator was injured with shrapnel and hospitalized. Damage to the plant was minor. The incident investigation showed that the sensitivity of intermediate products was underestimated. The plant design was changed prior to restart of operations.
