Abstract
A Gouy interferometer and a flowing-junction, boundary-sharpening cell have been used to obtain the composition and temperature dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient near the critical solution temperature of the methanol - hexane system. The results have been fitted to a smoothing equation which allows extrapolation to zero diffusivity characteristic of the spinodal curve. In particular, NRTL parameters were fitted as a function of temperature to measured coexistence curve data and then used to predict spinodal compositions; the results differ appreciably from the experimentally derived values. Additionally, a temperature-jump cell was used to measure the diffusion coefficient as a function of temperature along the critical composition line and critical exponent of 0. 685 was obtained.
