The authors describe a distillation column for a mixture of n-hexane and n-heptane, operating as a a heat pump, in which the thermodynamic fluid is formed of the top vapours (n-hexane) which are recompressed. Following the thermodynamic analysis of the system (coefficient of performance), they present the dimensional calculations for the column, the choice of the compressor, and that of the heat exchanger that heats the distillation fluid. The experimental results serve to calculate the different energy balances (evaporation, condensation, compression) and the real COP, revealing the value of the process in comparison with conventional distillation and with heating by a heat pump using an auxiliary fluid.
