Abstract
Objective: To summarize the research status of the animal models of breast precancer. Methods: A computer-based online search of Medline database and CHKD database was undertaken for literature about breast precancer published from May 1961 to December 2007 with the key words of "breast precancer, breast cancer, DMBA, animal models", and 652 papers in English and 103 papers in Chinese were searched, respectively. The literature about the animal models of breast precancer was selected after first selection. Selection criteria: 1) the carcinogenesis mechanism of DMBA, 2) the selection of animals, 3) the application methods of DMBA, 4) the pathology character. Hundreds of papers about animal models of breast precancer were collected, and 58 were selected according to the inclusive criteria. Finally, 35 articles were analyzed. Results: Breast precancer was a necessary and conversable phase during the canceration, and its animal model was obtained by inducing with DMBA generally, and stopping halfway in time before canceration. This method was easy in reproducing, steady in results, and similar to human in morphology. Conclusion: It is a perfect method for study of breast cancer etiology and prevention by inducing rats with DMBA and reproducing animal models of breast precancer.
