Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during 2003 and 2004 to study the relative importance of various inputs on the growth and yield of summer greengram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]. The results revealed that the combination of weed control (2 hoeings 20 and 40 days after sowing), fertilizer application (15 kg N + 17.3 P/ha as basal) and plant protection measures [spraying Dimethoate 30 EC @ 250 ml/ha at flowering against thrips and Endosulfan 35 EC @ 2.5 l/ha at podding stage against pod-borers] significantly increased plant growth, yield attributes, grain yield and net returns over control. For enhancing the grain yields, weed control proved to be the most important operation, followed by fertilizers and plant protection measures, as these contributed 122.5, 46.4 and 32.8% increase in yield respectively over the control. Based on two years pooled data, the treatment of weed control + fertilizers + plant protection registered highest net returns of Rs 15 235/ha, followed by weed control + plant protection (Rs 11 140/ha) and weed control (Rs 10 210/ha). The control treatment received lowest returns of Rs 3 145/ha.
