A recent study has reported a possible link between pregnant women's exposure to phthalates and abnormal genital development in male infants. The study indicates that exposure to phthalates at current levels found in the environment can adversely affect human male development. Data were collected from 85 male infant-mother pairs, and the children, aged 3-26 months and were examined for genetic indicators of normal reproductive development. Higher levels of four phthalate metabolites such as mono ethyl phthalate, mono n-butyl phthalate, mono benzyl phthalate and mono isobutyl phthalate were found to correlate with a higher than expected number of abnormalities in genital development.
