Abstract
The researchers have measured nine phthalate metabolites in the urine samples of 163 infants born from 2000 to 2005, to find the link of the disease with the use of infant personal care products such as lotions, powders, and shampoos. The study says that exposure to lotion was predictive of monoethyl phthalate and monomethyl phthalate concentrations, powder of monoisobutyl phthalate, and shampoo of monomethyl phthalate. The personal care products industry has however criticized the study and said that the only phthalate used in baby products is diethyl phthalate (DEP). The industry said that only one of the seven phthalate compounds reported is used in baby care products and that most of the phthalates found in the urine samples could have came from another route of exposure.
