A technique for the cooling of underground cables by a process of evaporation-condensation in a closed cycle is presented. The process entails the evaporation of a volatile fluid in the vicinity of the cables and the condensation of the resulting vapor in air- or water-cooled condensers. Strategic location of the condensers permits cooling system operation without the need for power machinery. Experimental and theoretical studies of the cooling of a pipe-type transmission circuit are presented. These studies include the verification of the cooling system operation with distilled water, methanol and Freon 11 as the volatile liquid. Results indicate that the technique increases significantly the current rating of cables.
