Ethylene oxide sterilization is a complex process. Careful control is required to assure sterility of the medical device and lack of toxic residues in the sterilized product. Investigations have indicated that medical grade plastics previously gamma irradiated can be ethylene oxide sterilized without fear of excessive 2 chloroethanol formation.
