Shell and tube heat exchangers involving forced convection surface boiling outside the tubes are frequently employed in refrigeration plant. Proper design of such evaporators requires accurate knowledge of the influence of the flow velocity on surface boiling heat transfer coefficient. An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed to obtain systematic surface boiling heat transfer data with R11 flowing normal to a tube and parallel to a flat plate. Experimental results of a test program are presented. Measurements have been performed with Freon 11 flowing normal to a cylinder and parallel to a flat plate to show the influence of the flow velocity and liquid subcooling on surface boiling heat transfer coefficient.
