1. 1. The isomerization of six-membered cyclanes to five-membered cyclanes under the influence of ahminium chloride with continuous removal of the pentamethylenes formed from the reaction zone has been studied. 2. 2. The optimum conditions permitting six-membered cyelanes to be converted into five-membered cyelanes with high yields-which, in the isomerization of cyclohexane to methylcyclopentane, amount to 96%-have been found. 3. 3. In the isomerization of methylcyclohexane, 65% of 1,2-dimethylcyclopentane and 26% of 1,3-dimethylcyclopentane are formed, while 1,4-dimethylcyclohexane gives a mixture of 1,2,3- and 1,2,4-trimethylcyclopentanes with yields of 76 and 9%, respectively. 1962.
