Abstract
1. The kinetics of the oxidation of phenols and naphthols by oxygen were studied at the temperature 120-220° in benzene and cyclohexane medium. The reaction of these compounds with oxygen proceeds bimolecularly with an initial rate W0=2k[InH][O2]. 2. The activation energies were determined and the rate constants were calculated for the reaction of oxygen with the following phenols:α-naphthol, paramethoxyphenol, β-naphthol, para-cresol, and phenol. 3. Satisfactory correlation was obtained between the logarithms of the rate constants of the reactions of InH +O2, on the one hand, and the critical redox potentials of the phenols and naphthols, the constants σ and σ+, and the logarithms of the rate constants of the reactions of InH+RO2, on the other hand. 1970 Consultants Bureau.
