Abstract
The kinetics of hydrolysis of the two isochemical azomethine sites of 1,3-bis(salicylidiniminomethyl)cyclohexane (1) abbreviated as BAMC - Sal or LH2 has been investigated at different pH's and temperatures. The studies reveal that the schiff base exists in several acid-base forms, viz. LH4+2, LH3+, LH2, LH- and L-2 depending on the pH. The two azomethine sites undergo near simultaneous hydrolysis which is first order in [BAMC-Sal]. The effect of pH on the rate of hydrolysis has been found to be governed by both acid-base equilibrium and resonance electronic effects. Linear regression best-fits of the kinetic plots are used to arrive at the pKa1, pKa2, pKa3, pKa4. The activation energy and other thermodynamic data of hydrolysis of BAMC - Sal, at different pH's, have been evaluated by Arrhenius plots and Eyring Equation.
