1. In addition to dehydrogenation of piperdine, there is also methane cleavage (with the liberation of ammonia) and carbon formation on a nickel-alumina catalyst over the temperature range 260-380. 2. The effect of excess water vapor on the course of these reactions was studied. 3. In addition to the reactions listed, in the presence of water vapor piperidine also undergoes a conversion reaction which proceeds at a very low rate over the temperature range studied. 4. The activation energies, pre-exponential factors, and proportionality coefficients between these constants, a, were calculated for all the reactions observed. The data obtained for piperidine are compared with analogous data for cyclohexane and ethane and they are interpreted from the point of view of the multiplet theory of catalysis. 1960 Consultants Bureau Enterprises, Inc.
