Abstract
1. The isotherms of the adsorption of benzene on a nickel-zinc oxide catalyst, zinc oxide, and metallic nickel were obtained at the temperatures 100-270°C and pressures up to 60 mm. Under the conditions studied, only physical adsorption is observed on zinc oxide, while on the nickel-zinc oxide catalyst and metallic nickel, chemisorption of benzene is also observed, the limiting value of which is already reached at 20 mm. 2. The surface of the nickel phase in the nickel-zinc oxide catalyst was determined; its value agrees with that calculated from the x-ray diffraction data. On this basis we noted the possibility of separate determination of the surface of nickel in catalysts applied on zinc oxide, according to the chemisorption of benzene. The results also indicate a flat orientation of the benzene molecules in the chemisorbed layer. 3. The data obtained can be considered as a confirmation of the basic hypothesis on the mechanism of the hydrogenation of benzene and dehydrogenation of cyclohexane, where substantial chemisorption of benzene is assumed. 1970 Consultants Bureau.
