Abstract
The authors focus on the synthesis and structural characterization of well-defined diblock copolymers comprised of a polydimethylsiloxane block and a poly(2-ethyloxazoline) block to be used for the surface studies. A set of three polysiloxane/poly(2-ethyloxazoline) copolymers were synthesized using the approximately 5000 g/mole siloxane 'macroinitiator' and covering a range of siloxane weight compositions. Experimental copolymerization conditions were established using benzyl chloride to initiate 2-ethyloxazoline homopolymer in chlorobenzene (a solvent for the siloxane oligomers, the 2-ethyloxazoline monomer, and the poly(2-ethyloxazoline) homopolymers). Since the authors have successfully prepared these copolymers, the methods used can now be extended to the previously reported triblock case for the purpose of increasing the block molecular weights achievable in those systems.
