Polymers are complex mixtures that may have different molecular weights even if they have the same chemical constitution. The effect of the chain molecular weight distribution (MWD) on the phase transition of binary polymer solutions and blends are studied quantitatively. We present a computational method to obtain phase diagrams in quasi-binary polymer solutions or blends based on the following temperature and concentration dependent χ interaction parameter. To illustrate the versatility of this theoretical approach, we present UCST, LCST, combined UCST and LCST, closed loop, and hourglass phase diagrams for a hypothetical polymer solution. Also no concentration dependence of the χ interaction parameter was found to be necessary to procure good agreement with the experimental data. The interaction parameter of the polystyrene/cyclohexane system or any other quasi-binary system is obtained by optimizing the fit of the calculated phase diagram to the experimental data.
