Abstract
Unsupported and graphite supported Pt-Au catalysts have been examined. The surface phase composition was determined by an electrochemical polarization method; the catalytic activity was measured in the liquid phase hydrogenation of eugenol, nitrobenzene or cyclohexane. We have found, in contrast with the literature, that gold cannot be regarded simply as a diluent in Pt-Au alloys and that, instead of enrichment of Au, enrichment of Pt always occurs on the surface. A possible interpretation of the results is that the surface and bulk compositions of the catalysts far from equilibrium, prepared below 400 K, are determined primarily by the heterogeneities occurring during preparation. 1982.
