Abstract
The annual variation of the mutagen concentration (MC) has been studied at three locations in Berlin, using the Ames-Salmonella/mammalian-microsome test. The MC was compared with the total suspended particulate (TSP) load, the Cyclohexane extractable organic mass fraction of TSP (CEOM) and selected polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The MC shows a distinct seasonal variation with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. The MC correlates well with CEOM which suggests that CEOM might be used as an indicator. An average MC of 6. 5 (range 1-15) revertants/m**3 was found.
