Abstract
Using the monomer in which the methacryloyl group was combined with a hexamethylene spacer accompanied by a mesogenic biphenyl group, EB (Electron Beam) reactivity of the monomers and properties of the liquid-crystalline side-chain polymer are reported. Two kinds of monomers, 4-(methacryloyloxy)hexyloxy-4′-methoxybiphenyl (MAHMB) and 4-(methacryloyloxy)hexyloxy-4′-ethoxybiphenyl (MAHEB) were synthesized. X-ray diffraction measurements were conducted on the irradiated samples having different preparation conditions. The reflections of poly-MAHMB and poly-MAHEB which were purified by the reprecipitation after EB irradiation, showed only broad amorphous halos, and the orientation of side-chains did not occur without thermal treatment. However, the reflections of as-irradiated polymers were similar to those of the melted samples. This indicate that the EB polymerization proceeds with intermolecular organization of mesogenic groups.
