Abstract
The article focuses on improvised explosives commonly encountered in the forensic investigation of explosive-related crime, mainly terrorism. The article examines the historical development and use of improvised explosives detailing terrorist attacks over five centuries. Classification systems are explored. Improvised explosives essentially fall into one of two classifications: mixtures and synthetics. The article lists common components of mixtures and examines their explosive properties. It then looks at the chemical and explosives properties of synthetics. The inorganic oxidizer ammonium nitrate and the peroxide explosives triacetone triperoxide and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine have been frequently used in terrorist devices and weapons and are examined in a little depth. 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
