Some effects of mass transfer limitations on cyclohexane oxidation kinetics

Integrated diffusion reaction models employing the film and penetration theories of gas absorption in liquid were developed and analyzed for the autooxidation of cyclohexane. Radical accumulation had an important role to play in certain regions of parameter space as compared to others. In the fast reaction regime, the enhancement factor followed the asymptotic formula with the minor modification that the Hatta number be defined in terms of radical concentrations at the interface as opposed to their bulk values. The hybrid Hatta number provided for a near exact estimation for the enhancement factor over a wide range of parameters but exact estimation of the radical concentrations made the procedure implicit. The possibility of indirect estimation was also studied by a simple quasi steady state approximation. This approximate method worked well in some regions of parameter space but failed led to errors in regions where radical accumulation was high. However, the error in estimation through the approximate method was still significantly lesser than estimating the Hatta number using bulk concentration. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 18th International Congress of Chemical Process Engineering (Praque, Czech Republic 8/24-28/2008).
