Qatar Petroleum's (QP) Gas Development Department and its Joint Venture Partners QatarGas (QG) and RasGas (RG) produce natural gas and associated liquids from offshore well drilled from production platforms in the super-giant North Field (NF). Qatar is the world's largest exporter and trans-shipper of LNG; Gas-to-liquids plants will use NF gas to produce approximately 140,000 bbl/d of GTL products and 120,000 boe/d of upstream products in 2010. Declaration of NF commerciality occurred after 15 appraisal wells were drilled over 14 years following Shell Company Qatar's Northwest Dome-1 gas discovery in 1971. QG and RG were formed to develop and exploit NF's reserves under QP's supervision. During early development drilling, it was recognized that management of the large volume of E&Pdata generated during NF's rapid development would be a major challenge. In 2000, QP, RG and QG adopted the NF Master Database Strategy (MDS) and produced a joint technical specification for a fully integrated, secure, multidisciplinary E&P database (MDDB). Design, implementation, integration and initial data population of the MDDB were completed during 2005-2008. Digital (>50 TB) and paper-based data for about 60 seismic surveys and 120 wells in the NF area were gathered, quality checked and loaded. Data domains includedseismic, physical assets, geosciences, drilling and completion, petroleum and reservoir engineering production operations. Current and historical data capture and functional evolution are ongoing; Basic data coverage has been expanded to over 300 wells. Validated data provided by RG and QG in standardized spreadsheets are subjected to additional validation steps prior to loading. NF staff access data via GUIs designed to deliver tabular datareports and graphical displays for the field, a specific platform or well. Links to the physical asset management system allow entitled users to view metadata for all available documents for a selected item (e. G., well or platform), and scanned images of those documents. Benefits reaped so far include: 1) increased E&P data tracking resulting inhigher-quality, validated data capture in a timely manner according to an established routine; 2) faster validated data access in a secure environment by NP users; 3) single-point access for diverse data types for analysis and comparison across JV partners; 4) the ability to extract the data for use in internal reports; 5) long-term preservation of the organized, validated data; and 6) creation of data management standards applicable to all QP oil and gas data.
