International awareness of the ecological consequences of the use of synthetic dyes has lead to the development of natural dyes. They are non-toxic, biodegradable and conserve energy as they are not developed from petroleum products. Natural dyes have their limitations. They are expensive, lack standardisation and there is a lot of colour variation. The present processes need optimisation. This study aims to overcome these difficulties. Ultrasound energy was used to extract red dye from Sappan wood. using ecofriendly mordants the dye was used on cotton. The addition of tannic acid improved the fastness of the dye. The article concludes that Sappan wood dye is a good source of natural cotton dye and that wing ultrasound energy is a safe and ecologically sound method of dye extraction.
