Abstract
The Lower Phalen Creek Project is a community-driven effort to transform a strategically located urban watershed into an area rich with ecological, recreational, and social value. Situated along the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota, the project includes a range of activities to improve local water quality and restore and expand existing green spaces. Two key aspects of the project include: • The successful community effort to daylight a section of Phalen Creek as it flows through Swede Hollow Park, an important local landmark that was once a settlement area for recent immigrants. • The acquisition of a 27-acre brownfield site on the Mississippi River floodplain, and its transformation into the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary at Lower Phalen Creek. © 2008 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
