A multi-phase extraction (MPE) pilot test was conducted at the former Fire Fighting Facility to evaluate the effectiveness of bioventing, free-hydrocarbon product recovery and in-situ bioremediation technologies in remediating two hydrocarbon plumes (Jet Fuel No. 5). The pilot test included a skimmer test, a stepped-up MPE test at varying well head vacuums and an in-situ respiration test that are designed to generate the data needed for the design of a full-scale system. The total volume of hydrocarbons and water recovered during the skimmer test was 14.2 and 152 gal, respectively. For the MPE test conducted at 3 separate vacuums, that the hydrocarbons recovered/water recovered ratio was ~ 1:6. An average biodegradation rate of 7 mg-total petroleum hydrocarbon/kg-soil/day was achieved during the in-situ respiration test. Based on these results, a full-scale system was designed and is now in operation.
